Google Adsense Optimization Tips

Here are the Google Adsense optimization tips for bloggers and webmasters. To make more money from Adsense, you have to learn Adsense optimization and implement it in your blogs or web sites. I summarized here the Adsense optimization tips from Google and from Adsense experts.

Adsense Optimization for Ad Types

Adsense Text ad is the best among Adsense ad types available that include text, image, and link unit. Readers easily captured the information displayed in text ads compared to others. Though there are texts in image, the readers will process first the visualization of the image and the text. While link unit captures also the readers attention, it takes 2 clicks to make money from it and the readers are normally lazy to do the 2nd click. But, this is the best ad type for maximizing space in the web page. This adds more resources to the readers.

Adsense Optimization for Ad Formats

Wide Adsense Ad format works better than vertical Adsense ads. The wider ad format lets the readers easily captures one-liner texts of information at convenient width of around up to 500 pixels. Readers can conveniently capture the information at a glance. Narrow ad formats inconveniently force the readers’ eyes move down to the next line.

Here are the Adsense ad format suggested by Google from the most effective to the least and how to implement it in your blog or web site:

1. 336×280 large rectangle: Embed or blend this ad format with content or make it stands out from others within your blog or web pages.

2. 300×250 inline rectangle: Place this ad format at the top, on the right and at the bottom of your blog or web site pages.

3. 160×600 wide skyscraper: Place this ad format on the left, on the right or embed it with content in your blog or web pages.

Adsense Optimization for Ad Colors

Optimizing Adsense Ad colors has a great impact to your Adsense income. Ad colors can make relevant Adsense links as additional useful resources to readers who are looking for more information or solutions to their problems. Google suggested to blend, complement or contrast Adsense colors with the colors of your blog or web pages. For best results, use colors of the links that are existing and prominent in your pages. See more Adsense tips on colors that make cents and dollars, here.

Adsense Optimization for Ad Placement

Optimizing ad placement of you Google ads is another key to optimize your Adsense income. Normally, the best ad placement is on the left side next to your post or article. Next best placement is immediately before the page article/post or between the post title and post body. Then, another best placement is after your post body. Please note, however, that the best placement still depends on the content of every page.

Adsense Optimization for Content Targeting

You have to optimize the content targeting of your Adsense to emphasize and de-emphasize the page content which the Adsense based its Google ads to be displayed.

To emphasize the content or section of the page, enclose it with Google ad section HTML tags within the body tags (
and
), like this:

<!– google_ad_section_start –>

Emphasized content or section here

<!– google_ad_section_end –>

To de-emphasize the content or section, add weight=ignore to the Google ad section starting HTML tags, like this:

<!– google_ad_section_start(weight=ignore) –>

De-emphasized content or section here

<!– google_ad_section_end –>

Manually inserting Adsense Code to New Blogger Template

Here’s another way of inserting Adsense Code to New Blogger Template. Since adding Adsense as Page Element is limited to the setup provided by Blogger.com, you need to manually insert Adsense codes in other areas of the template not provided.

Escaping Adsense Code Before Inserting in Blogger Template

To manually insert Adsense code in new Blogger template, you have to escape HTML characters or convert the HTML codes to HTML entities like these: < to <, > to > and ” to ". Without escaping Adsense HTML codes, Adsense will not work properly. Your Adsense code should look like this example of large Google Ad (XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX is the publisher ID):

&lt;script type="text/javascript"><!–
google_ad_client = "pub-XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX";
google_ad_width = 336;
google_ad_height = 280;
google_ad_format = "336×280_as";
google_ad_type = "text_image";
google_ad_channel = "";
google_color_border = "FFFFFF";
google_color_bg = "FFFFFF";
google_color_link = "0000FF";
google_color_text = "000000";
google_color_url = "6600CC";
//–></script>
<script type="text/javascript"
src="http://pagead2…/pagead/show_ads.js">
</script>

I have prepared a page to easily escape HTML codes to HTML entities, here (opens in new window). Copy and paste your Adsense code to the box provided and click convert. Then, cut and paste the converted or escaped Adsense codes to your Blogger template. Preview it if displayed properly.

Inserting Adsense Code Before or After Blog Title

Insert the converted Adsense code within

, like this:

Adsense code here (before Blog title)

<b:section class=’header’ id=’header’ maxwidgets=’1′ showaddelement=’no’>
<b:widget id=’Header1′ locked=’true’ title=’Blog Title (Header)’ type=’Header’/>
</b:section>

Adsense code here (after Blog title)

Inserting Adsense Code After Blog Title Before Blog Post

Insert the converted Adsense code within

, like this:

Adsense code here (before blog post)

<b:section class=’main’ id=’main’ showaddelement=’no’>
<b:widget id=’Blog1′ locked=’true’ title=’Blog Posts’ type=’Blog’/>
</b:section>

Adsense code here (after blog post)

Inserting Adsense Code Within the Blog Sidebar

Insert the converted Adsense code within

, like this:

Adsense code here (before Blogger widgets)

<b:section class=’sidebar’ id=’sidebar’ preferred=’yes’>
<b:widget id=’Label1′ locked=’false’ title=’Labels’ type=’Label’/>
<b:widget id=’BlogArchive1′ locked=’false’ title=’Blog Archive’ type=’BlogArchive’/>
</b:section>

Adsense code here (after Blogger widgets)

If you want to insert Adsense code between 2 widgets, you have to assign a different sidebar id for each widget affected and add converted Adsense code between them, like this:

<b:section class=’sidebar’ id=’sidebar1′ preferred=’yes’>
<b:widget id=’Label1′ locked=’false’ title=’Labels’ type=’Label’/>
</b:section>

Adsense code here (between 2 Blogger widgets)

<b:section class=’sidebar’ id=’sidebar2′ preferred=’yes’>
<b:widget id=’BlogArchive1′ locked=’false’ title=’Blog Archive’ type=’BlogArchive’/>
</b:section>

Inserting Adsense Code Within the Blog Footer

Insert the converted Adsense code within

, like this:

Adsense code here (before Blog footer content)

<b:section class=’footer’ id=’footer’>
<b:widget id=’AdSense1′ locked=’false’ title=” type=’AdSense’/>
</b:section>

Adsense code here (after Blog footer content)

For your info, however, there are questions if this kind of Adsense code modification violates Adsense Policy and Adsense TOS. In my opinion, it is not as this is just a server-side scripting. If you view the HTML source code of your Blogger page where you inserted a converted Adsense Code, you will see an unmodified Adsense code. So, there is no code modification in HTML implementation. I will discuss more of this in my next post.

Learn here how to insert Adsense codes to Blogger template As Page Element. I am referring to the New Blogger template. Methods of inserting Adsense code in FTP and non-FTP Blogger templates are different. If you’re blogging with FTP Blogger, click here to learn inserting Adsense code.

This is the page where you can Click and drag to rearrange page elements on your blog. There are links “Add a Page Element” in the page layout. By clicking that link, you may add all or selected page element(s) or widget(s) including Adsense on the template area where you click the link.

To insert Adsense codes, just click “Add to Blog” link under Adsense and configure it based on your choice of colors, format and size. Look at the Preview and if you like it, click Save Changes. Here is the configure Adsense dialog box:

Configure Blogger Adsense

After adding Adsense, if you check your template you should see this Adsense widget codes:

<b:widget id=’AdSense1 (or Adsense2..Adsense3..and so on)’ locked=’false’ title=” type=’AdSense’/>

Adsense Optimization Tips or Techniques

For the best monetization of your Adsense, click the Adsense optimization tip link that says “What color combinations are best for my site?” in Configure Adsense dialog box. It recommends optimizing color palletes if you want the biggest revenue impact for the smallest effort. It outlined 3 Adsense optimization techniques, namely: blend, complement and contrast. Blend is to make the background and borders of your ads the same color as the background of your page where the ad is placed. Complement is use colors that already exist on your site, but don’t match the background and borders exactly where the ads are placed. And Contrast is to choose colors that stand out against the background of your site.

That’s it. Inserting Adsense to new Blogger template As Page Element is as easy as that. It’s all in the box.
