Do's of search engine optimization (SEO)
- Do submit your web site to search engines like Google, MSN, Yahoo, Ask.com and ExactSeek.
- Do submit your web site to relevant directories such as DMOZ (Open Directory Project) as well as to other industry-specific expert sites.
- Do place robots.txt file in your root directory. This file tells crawlers which directories can or cannot be crawled. Visit RobotsTxt.org to learn how to instruct search engine robots when they visit your site.
- Do offer a site map to your users with links that point to the important parts of your site.
- Do use text instead of images to display important content or links.
- Do minimize using dynamic pages having "?" in URL and keep them short.
- Do use If-Modified-Since HTTP header if supported by your web server. This allows your web server to tell some of the search engines that your content has changed since the last crawl.
- Do request for a reciprocal linking with relevant quality web sites.
- Do write an interesting articles relevant to your web site and submit to article web sites like EzineArticles and ArticleAlley.
- Do include your site link in your signatures in email and forums.
Don'ts of search engine optimization (SEO)
- Don't make any tricks intended to improve search engine rankings. Useful test is to ask, "Does this help my users? Would I do this if search engines didn't exist?"
- Don't deceive search engines and your users by presenting different content to search engines than you display to users, which is commonly referred to as "cloaking."
- Don't use any keywords in your meta keywords that are not relevant to your body copy or content of your web page.
- Don't participate in link schemes designed to increase your site's ranking or PageRank. In particular, avoid linking to web spammers or "bad neighborhoods" on the web. Your ranking will be negatively affected by these unwanted web sites.
- Don't create "doorway" pages just for search engines, or other "cookie cutter" approaches such as affiliate programs with little or no original content.
- Don't use unauthorized computer programs to submit pages, check rankings, etc. as they consume computing resources of the search engines.
- Don't create hidden text or hidden links like making the color of your font same as your background or making the size of your font as 1 pixel. Search engines detect this tricks.
- Don't use multiple instances of the same HTML tag like using more than one title tag. Search engines view this as spam.
- Don't create multiple pages, subdomains, or domains with substantially duplicate content as search engines can view them as spam.
- Don't create pages that install viruses, trojans, or other badware.
- Don't list keywords anywhere except in your keywords meta tag as search engines view this as spam.
- Don't submit the same page to any search engine more than once within 24hrs.
Follow the above do's and don'ts of search engine optimization (SEO) and you will be safe from being blacklisted by the search engines. You may even rank well in the search engine listings with this search engine optimization strategies.
