Learning The Search Engine Optimization For Dummies - Part 2




Search engine optimization of the body copy of your web page is equally critical for both search engines and search engine users or web surfers. The body copy is located between the body tags <*body> and <*/body> (without the asterisk [*]). This is the content of your web page that is crawled and read by the search engines. The search engines will know what your web site is really up to and if you really have a unique and quality content to offer. These search engines even use your body copy to describe your web site in their listings.

On the other hand, the search engine users will see your web site in the search engine listings with the description extracted by the search engine from your body copy. If these users visit your site, the body copy of your web page will be displayed to them. When your visitors see your body copy or content, they will evaluate if your web site really has the information or content that they are looking for or if there is anything interesting in your web site. Then, they will decide if they will stay in your web site or just click the Back button or X at the top right of his/her browser.

So, first impression and quality content is the key for your visitors to stay. This search engine optimization for dummies will make your web page impressive to both search engines and search engine users. You will learn optimizing the page headline, body copy, text links and image ALT tags.

Optimizing page headline


Page headline must be the most noticeable or the most obvious text of the body copy of your web page. It must be enclosed with heading tags, <*h1> and <*/h1> (without the asterisk [*]). Some search engines do not use the meta description in the listing of web site on their SERPs. Instead, they use the first 150-200 characters of your body copy to describe your web site listing. This includes the Page Headline and the next first 1 or 2 sentences of your body copy. Following are the tips in optimizing the page headline:

  • Limit your headline up to maximum of 40 characters including spaces.
  • Include the top 1-2 keyword phrases of your web page.
  • Headline is just a phrase not a sentence. Hence, no need to put period at the end.
  • If the headline is more than 1 line, break it in to 2 in understandable manner by using <*br> tag (without the asterisk [*]).
  • Use Upper and Lower Case but do not use ALL CAPS.
  • Use h2 to h6 for your subheadings in proper order.


Optimizing body copy


The Body Copy of you web page is where you lay down the information you offer. It is the actual text that your visitors could read. Just like your visitors, the search engines read the copy on your web page to figure out what you have to offer. The search engines will read the keyword phrases in the copy of your page. Following are the tips in optimizing the body copy:

  • Make sure that each of your web page has at least 200 words of copy on it. Search engines like a web pages with great amount of content.
  • Limit the copy of your home page up to a maximum of 6 paragraphs. For your other pages, avoid making it too short or too long that makes people to exit your site quickly.
  • Include the important keyword phrases that you used in meta keywords, meta description, title, headlines, sub-headings, alt tags, etc. in the beginning of your web page.
  • Compel the search engine users to click on your Search Engine listing. Your first paragraph and headline will appear in some search engine listings.
  • Use your important keyword phrases a bit more at the top of your Body Copy and also in the closing paragraph. Then weave it throughout the rest of your copy.
  • Choose general keywords that a searcher is most likely to associate with your important keyword phrases. Use some common synonyms/variations of your keyword phrases.
  • Establish the main benefits of reading your copy for your visitors right away. Cite the unique information your web page has.
  • Create an enjoyable reading environment for your visitors.
  • Use friendly and informed tone, active verbs and short sentences.
  • Limit your paragraphs to 4-5 lines only.
  • Make sure your copy is grammatically correct, logical and easy to understand.
  • Compel your visitors to read the rest of your page down to your income-generating links.
  • Do not exaggerate. Be honest and realistic. Cite an examples, if possible.
  • Make a web pages of how-to articles, tips, guides and tutorials. These will not only help you in the search engines, but many other sites will link to them too.


Optimizing text links or hyperlinks


Text links help the search engines to crawl deeper into your own web site. The search engines look for keywords in the text links and any texts that immediately precede or follow the links. Text links also smoothly direct your visitors to valuable related pages within your own web site or to your money making pages through the in-context text links. Following are the tips in optimizing the text links or hyperlinks:

  • Include important keyword phrases within the text link itself or in the text that immediately preceeds or follows the link.
  • Offer your visitors a text links to return to your home page, to go to your other web pages and to go to other related authority web sites.
  • Limit the number of links on your every web page to less than 100.


Optimizing image ALT tags


Image ALT Tag is the text attribute of the images on your web page, i.e. <*img src="" alt="text attribute of the image" height="" width="" border=""> (without the asterisk [*]). This text in ALT tag will be displayed when the browser of your visitor is configured not to display images. In some browsers, this text also shows up when the visitor hovers or points the mouse over the image. More importantly, the search engines could not read the text contained in the images. Hence, some of them read the text of the image ALT tag, instead. Following are the tips in optimizing the image ALT tags:

  • Do not use more than a brief sentence or two to describe an image.
  • Use the keyword phrases that you used in your page body copy, title tag, meta keywords, meta description, heading and other tags.
  • Do not repeat keyword phrase but use a variant or other forms.
  • Describe the image. Do not just list the keyword phrases.


Search engine optimization for dummies is really a big help to have a good chance of ranking well in the search engines. But remember, these optimization tips are nothing if your web site does not offer any help or solution to your visitors.
